Story: Ravana and Sita

Ravan tricks Sita and abducts her.

Plot Summary:

After being banished from the kingdom, Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana go live in the jungle. Rama refuses his brother Bharata pleads for his return as to honor their father's wishes. One day, Rama meets Shurpanakha, sister to the demon king Ravana, and she falls in love with him. After an altercation, Lakshmana mutilated Shurpanakhas body, which she did not take kindly. She went to her brother, Khara, who along with an army of 14 thousand rakshasas attacked Rama and his companions. Unfortunately, the Rakshasas were defeated by Rama. Shurpanakhas then went to her brother Ravana for aid. Ravana agreed to take revenge on Rama and device a plan to trick him. With the help of Maricha disguised as a deer, he lured Rama away from Sita, then lured Lakshmana away from Sita. He then kidnapped Sita, after a particularly nasty fight with the vulture Jatayu. Nevertheless, he took Sita and carried her away to his palace.

My thoughts:

I think the kidnapping of Sita, was one of the most important turning points at this part of the story. I liked the fact that the love Sita and Rama have for one another was tested. The loyalty from Lakshmana was also tested. In the beginning, we also see Rama's brother Bharata declare Rama, the true king. It goes to show the strong bond the brother have.

The story of deception and trickery reminds me of other trickery from demons in other mythologies.
