Hello! My name is Kevin Monreal, I am currently a senior at OU, finally. One of the coolest things about my major, Information Studies, is the flexibility that it gives you to pursue your own path and interests. I want to use my degree to work in the IT industry, I already work part-time for OU IT where I'm obtaining valuable experience. In the future, I am hoping to focus more on the realm of cybersecurity. Last semester was a great semester for me, my two favorite classes were data mining and website design; I know they sound really boring for some people but I found them interesting, and I learned a lot. Last semester, apart from passing all my classes, a significant accomplishment was getting a 4.0 for the semester, finally bringing my GPA out of life support.
I have lots of hobbies. I like to read, the most recent books that I read were "Beyond Good and Evil" by Friedrich Nietzsche, "The Alchemist" by Paulo Cohelo, and "Norse Mythology" by Neil Gaiman. I do lots of commuting and like to listen to a podcast while driving, lately, I've been immersed in history podcasts, I recommend Dan Carlin's podcast if you like history, it is phenomenal. I play the guitar, although not very good, and I also like to play video games. I got my hands into an Oculus system and have been getting into Virtual Reality gaming, it is incredible. I am also excited because this year one of my favorite shows, Game of Thrones, is coming back for its last season, so I am looking forward to that. If I had time, I would like to start drawing and painting again. When I was little, I would make all kinds of paintings. Lately, I been thinking about remaking an old painting I have about a wizard taming a dragon, but I just don't have the time. Fun fact about me, I'm a certified grill master, but I hate cooking.

Hey Kevin! "Finally bringing my GPA out of life support". Congrats on that accomplishment, that is the most relatable thing I have read. I liked reading through your blog. I am also a fan of Game of Thrones. I cannot wait for the new episodes to be released. I took a class called "Vikings" at OU for my major and ever since I took it I have been extremely fascinated by Norse Mythology and I think Neil Gaiman had done a fantastic job portraying several of the myths. I love video games as well. I can not wait for the new Kingdom Hearts 3 to come out. I hope you have a good time creating the blogs for the class. I will be excited to read them.
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin! I think many can relate to "finally brining my GPA out of life support". Great job on doing that! I hope that I can accomplish the 4.0 semester GPA by the time I graduate. I am also a big fan of Game of Thrones, I cant wait for April! I used to draw all the time in middle and high school, but that quickly ended once I started college. I also want to start up again, but I just don't have the time to do it...
ReplyDeleteHey Kevin! I think it is awesome that you are perusing a career in IT. With how fast technology is growing we need more people like you! I am pretty terrible with technology so if I need any help, I now know who to talk to. Also, Game of Thrones is my favorite TV show and I am incredibly excited to see what happens in the final season. Thank you so much for suggesting the history podcast too. I love podcasts and will definitely check it out!
ReplyDeleteHey Kevin! I'm not sure if you are able to view my profile linked to my comment or not, but my name is Maria Cecilia Cox-Fuenzalida. I also enjoy listening to podcasts in my spare time, especially when I'm trying to pass time working out or driving in my car. I'll have to check out Dan Carlin's podcast, sometime! I really like reading about history and watching documentaries, so I feel like it would probably be up my alley. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHey Kevin! I love to hear people who are passionate about what they are studying! I work in cyber security for the air force and it is quite a fascinating and broad field. I have my Sec + certification but aside from that I don't have much formal training aside from air force training. I am a mechanical engineering major but I am fascinated with the cyber field in general.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on graduating! I can relate to your level of excitement with being a senior! Information Studies sounds like an interesting major and very versatile. Your blog post was refreshing to read because of the humor incorporated into it. Getting your GPA off “life support,” is a huge accomplishment and takes focus, which I lack. Good luck on your final year here at OU!
ReplyDeleteHey there, Kevin! I'm jealous that you are a senior!! I think your major is really cool and leaves a lot of opportunity for you to design your future. I am a music major and our path is pretty much laid out for us by our teachers and mentors. I also think it's awesome that you play guitar. I only know a few chords on the guitar myself. I also have played on an Oculus system and it was on of the best gaming experiences I've ever had!
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin! Oh my goodness last semester was also my first 4.0 so I feel your GPA pain. College is really hard! The most important thing is to just keep at it, and look how well you did! I think IT is such an interesting field because it is so vital to all other fields. What would the medical field look like without IT?? It would be a mess! The same could be said for all other fields. Anyways, I hope you have a great rest of your time at OU!!
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin! My boyfriend loves Neil Gaiman! He has read like the first quarter of that and fell in love. I don't know if you know this, but he wrote an episode of Doctor Who and we both love that. We also just got done watching the first episode of Game of Thrones season 8! Did you watch? Did you like it? What did you think? I think the ending was TRASH. I'm used to Hulu and Netflix where I can just click through. No more of this adult tv.
ReplyDeleteA 4.0 is quite an accomplishment! I've always wanted to get into listening to podcasts on long drives but I have yet to try to find one that I'd enjoy. I am also into GoT and I totally watched the first episode tonight. Thought I thought it was mostly filler and a hype episode, it was fun to see may of our favorite characters in one place. Also, I've always wanted a VR headset they seem so fun! Just don't have the money to space to just buy one for myself haha
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin. I couldn't help but laugh about your comment of bringing your GPA out of life support. This semester I will hopefully get all A's and bring my grades up. The books you list off are really good. I have some experience with Nietzche because of my high school debate time. I am also reading the alchemist right now! Good luck and have a great summer.
ReplyDeleteHey Kevin! I'm a senior also, but I study math instead. Data Mining and Website Design sound like fun classes to me! I would've taken more upper division computer science courses if I had more time, but fortunately I'm not failing any classes this semester so I will be graduating as planned. Congratulations on earning a 4.0 last semester, by the way. That's quite an accomplishment, especially during your senior year.
ReplyDeleteHi Kevin!
ReplyDeleteI think it is very amazing that you are majoring in Information Studies. I also think it is really good that you want to pursue a career in cyber security. I think is awesome that you took a web design class because I took that class in high school and enjoyed it a lot. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up taking all the other web design classes that my school had on offer.
Hey Kevin,
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I don't think those classes sound boring at all. I'm a senior as well, but I will be coming back for a fifth year because I plan to finish out my dual majors and then add a minor. I have also read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Cohelo at the insistence of my uncle and it was a good read. I haven't caught up on the most recent Game of Thrones episodes so no spoilers, but I love it as well. I hope you find time to be able to paint and draw like you wish because I know I am certainly struggling for that time as well. Good luck on finals!
