Story: The Turtle and The Geese
The story comes from the versions in Jataka Tales by Ellen C. Babbitt.
Main Characters:
The Turtle and two wild Geese.
Plot Summary:
The Turtle became friends with two wild Geese. The Geese asked the Turtle if he wanted to come to their beautiful house with them. The Turtle accepted but was worried about transportation. The Geese told the Turtle to hold a stick with its mouth and not say a word until they get home, then the Geese both picked up an end of the stick and took flight, with the Turtle between them. When the village children saw them, they taunted them and said how ridiculous the whole thing was. The Turtle looked down and told them it was none of their business, and fell to its death. When the people came to see the turtle, they said, "that fellow could not keep his mouth shut. He had to talk, and so lost his life."
My Thoughts:
This story really stuck out with me. It is a really short and quite simple story, but I think the message is what got me. Here are some of the things I got from the story:
- When you are flying high, do not talk down on people taunting you.
- Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut.
- Maybe is it not worth it responding to negativity.
